The Brandon University Bobcats took a three-set win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon.
Brandon opened the match with a 25-20 victory before cruising to a 25-16 win in a second set which saw the Bobcats hit at a .269 clip as a team.
The third set was more hotly contested, but it still went Brandon's way as a Deserae Unger kill finished off a 25-23 win for the Bobcats. The two teams were tied as late as 22-22, but an Unger kill and a block put Brandon (3-12) up 24-22 and the home side was able to convert on its second attempt at match point.
Rayvn Wiebe led all players in both kills (10) and digs (12) for Brandon, while Danielle Larocque chipped in with eight kills and Katie Primeau added seven. Unger finished with six kills and a match-leading six blocks.
Jessica Lerminiaux led the Cougars (2-13) with eight kills and also added seven digs.
The Cougars and the Bobcats will meet again on Saturday night (6:00) in Brandon.
