Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Overtime winner gives Cougars fourth consecutive victory

Landon Peel scored on a breakaway just 12 seconds into double overtime as the University of Regina's men's hockey team took a 2-1 win over UBC on Saturday afternoon in a thriller at The Co-operators Centre.

Peel's goal was set up by a brilliant pass by rookie forward Ty Barnstable that found him streaking up the right wing. Peel walked in all alone on UBC goalie Patrick Dea and made no mistake, going high blocker side to give the Cougars their fourth consecutive victory to start the calendar year.

"I thought our D corps was solid all weekend long and (Brandon) Holtby was really good in net for us tonight," Cougars head coach Todd Johnson said. "We have some depth up front and all four lines played hard. We were able to shut down their top line and that was the difference this weekend."

The torrid start to 2020 has lifted the Cougars past both UBC and Lethbridge into sole possession of sixth place in the Canada West standings.

"I'm just excited for the guys," Johnson said. "They worked really hard all through the break and I thought they were working hard even before that. I'm just really happy they're getting rewarded for their efforts."

UBC opened the scoring with four minutes left in the first when Austin Vetterl put a shot on net through traffic. Holtby made the save, but Jerret Smith was right there to tap in the rebound.

The UBC lead lasted until four minutes into the second, when Dea tried to ring the puck around the boards in his own zone. His clearance went right to Brennan Riddle, who ripped home a shot before Dea could recover.

The goals by Smith and Riddle were the only ones of regulation. The Cougars had a golden opportunity to win the game in the first overtime when they were awarded a penalty shot after a UBC skater covered up the puck in the crease, but Conner Chaulk hit the post on the attempt after making a nice deke to his forehand.

UBC ended up with a 42-33 advantage in shots, but Holtby - making his eight straight start in net for the Cougars - was up to the challenge yet again and made 41 stops to improve his Canada West-leading save percentage to .920 on the season.

Dea made 31 saves for UBC, which falls to 4-11-5 with the loss and will now prepare for a pair of home games next weekend against the Manitoba Bisons.

Regina (6-12-2) will put its win streak on the line next weekend with two road games at Mount Royal.
