Gabrielle Attieh piled up 14 kills to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 3-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.
Attieh had 14 kills on just 27 attacks, while Jayde Robertsen had eight kills and hit .545 for UBC in the win. Olivia Furlan added 31 assists and a team-high eight digs while also leading all players with six service aces to help UBC improve to 9-10 on the year.
UBC had 7-0 and 6-0 runs in a first set which they won by a 25-19 count, then followed that up with 25-17 and 25-21 wins in the second and third.
Caitlyn Spurr had a career-high seven kills and led the Cougars with a .385 hitting percentage.
Jessica Lerminiaux had a team-high 10 kills, while
Emma Matheson chipped in with seven and
Sierra Parris-Kruger led all players with 13 digs.
The loss officially eliminates the Cougars (2-17) from the Canada West postseason race, as they can now finish no higher than ninth in the conference standings.
The Cougars and UBC will play again on Saturday night. Match time is set for 7:00 PT.
