Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars edged 63-60 by Fraser Valley

The University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered a close 63-60 defeat to Fraser Valley on Friday night in a Canada West game in Abbotsford.

The Cougars led 60-57 after an Emily Dewey basket with a minute and a half to go, but UFV scored the game's final six points to come away with the win. The Cougars had a good look at a deep three-pointer as time expired, but it rimmed out as Fraser Valley held on for the win.

Fraser Valley, which improves to 15-4 with the win, was led by an 20-point, eight-rebound effort by Taylor Claggett. Deanna Tuchscherer added 14 points, while Jessica Parker scored 13.

Macaela Crone scored a team-leading 14 points for the Cougars, who fall to 8-11 with the loss but still have an outside chance at hosting a home play-in game. They'd need to defeat Fraser Valley in the rematch on Saturday night and also get help on the out-of-town scoreboard in the form of a Thompson Rivers win at Lethbridge.

Besides Crone's 14 points, the Cougars also got 10 from Faith Reid and nine from both Michaela Kleisinger and Alexi Rowden. Kleisinger added eight rebounds and seven assists, while Rowden led all players with 10 boards.

The two teams will play again on Saturday night (5:00 PT/7:00 SK) on the last day of the Canada West schedule.

NOTES: The Cougars will finish as the No. 8, No. 9, or No. 10 seed in the Canada West postseason depending on how the last day of conference play shakes out ... the Cougars could still play one of four teams in next weekend's play-in game as Lethbridge, UNBC, Victoria, and Winnipeg are all possible opponents.
