• The Rams are coming off two consecutive home games. They defeated then-No. 1 Calgary in an impressive Week 2 win, but suffered a 31-30 overtime loss to UBC last Saturday to fall to 1-2 on the season.
• Saskatchewan started out the year with a road loss to Calgary, but the Huskies have followed that up with convincing wins over UBC and Alberta since then and now sit alone in second place in the Canada West standings.
• Four Canada West teams are ranked in this week's U SPORTS Top Ten, including both of these two teams. Besides Saskatchewan at No. 6 and the Rams at No. 10, Manitoba leads the way at No. 4 while Calgary checks in at No. 7 in this week.
TOP TEN BATTLES
Entering Saturday's game, the Rams and Saskatchewan have met 10 times in history with both teams being ranked in the most recent U SPORTS Top Ten (eight Canada West games and two postseason contests). The Rams have a 7-3 record over the Huskies in games where both teams are ranked, and actually enjoy a 3-1 record over Saskatchewan when ranked below their rivals to the north in the poll. Saturday will be the 35th Canada West game played between the two teams.
WILD WEST
Somehow, last week featured two different Canada West teams reeling off 23 unanswered fourth-quarter points to record improbable comeback wins and turn the conference standings upside-down. When the dust settled after UBC's comeback win over the Rams and Manitoba doing the same to Calgary, the Bisons (3-0) and Saskatchewan (2-1) emerged as the only teams in Canada West over the .500 mark. The Rams are joined by Alberta, UBC, and Calgary in a four-way tie for third place at 1-2 (after throwing darts at a board and performing a series of coin flips, we think that tie is currently broken in the order of Alberta, UBC, Regina, Calgary).
SACK ATTACK
DL
Anthony Bennett brought down UBC's Garrett Rooker last week for the Rams' 10th sack of the season. Only one team in the nation (Wilfrid Laurier, with 14 sacks in four games) averages more sacks per contest than the Rams. LB
Josh White remains the team's leader with two sacks.
MIMBS WATCH
SB
D'Sean Mimbs, one of two starting rookie receivers for the Rams, caught another touchdown pass in the UBC game. Mimbs is now tied for second in Canada West and seventh in U SPORTS with three touchdown catches this season. And he's only one off of the U of R record for most touchdown receptions by a player in his first season of eligibility, which was set by Jason Clermont with four in 1999 and matched by Ryan Anderson in 2004.
CANADA WEST LEADER
LB
Josh White continues to lead Canada West with 4.5 tackles for loss. Two of those TFLs were sacks, putting the third-year player in a four-way tie for the conference lead in that category.
BIG GAME FOR SOMBACH
DB
Jackson Sombach made his presence felt in the UBC game, registering a first-quarter interception in the end zone - the first pick of his U of R career - and also knocking down two passes. The second-year halfback ranks second in Canada West with a total of five passes defended as he's got four pass breakups to go along with his interception this season.
TRIPLE DIGITS
SB
Bennett Stusek caught four passes for 58 yards in last week's game against UBC, making him the 20th player in University of Regina history to collect 1000 career receiving yards.
RETURN GAME
We mentioned a couple notes ago that Mimbs is one of a pair of rookies starting at receiver for the Rams. The other is WR
Emmett Steadman, who has been a mainstay at the Z position and has four catches for 82 yards this year. Steadman has also been the team's primary punt returner, returning 17 kicks for 130 yards for an average of 7.6 yards per return this season.
FAMILY TIES
Look for two pairs of siblings on the defensive side of the ball for the Rams on Saturday. DL
Matt Moore and DB
Zach Moore will both be among the starters, while DB
Jackson Sombach will start at halfback and DB
Carson Sombach will dress as a backup. SB
Bennett Stusek is the son of Rams special teams coordinator
Jeff Stusek. The two Grays on the coaching staff, defensive coordinator Sheldon and quarterbacks coach Frankie, are absolutely no relation.
