The No. 2-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies used a huge second quarter to pull away from the Regina Cougars to register an 80-53 road win on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
After the Cougars used a hot start to pull out to a 17-14 lead through the opening quarter, it was simply all Saskatchewan in the second. The Huskies reeled off 18 straight points as the Cougars went nearly six minutes without scoring, and when it was all said and done Saskatchewan outscored Regina 32-8 in the quarter to take a 21-point lead into halftime.
The win completed the weekend sweep for Saskatchewan (6-0) as the Huskies pulled out an overtime win over the Cougars on Friday night.
Summer Masikewich led Saskatchewan with 18 points and also tied for the game high with nine rebounds to finish just short of a double-double. Carly Ahlstrom also just missed out, finishing with 15 points and nine boards. Libby Epoch added 15 points for Saskatchewan, while Ella Murphy-Wiebe led the Huskies off the bench with eight points.
Saskatchewan is at home against Manitoba on Friday and Saturday, while the Cougars will have a long break before returning to action at Brandon on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15.
