Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars take opening set but come up short versus Bisons

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost to the Manitoba Bisons in four sets on Saturday night in Winnipeg.

The Cougars took the first set but dropped the following three to leave Winnipeg with a split. The Bisons were led by Keziah Hoeppner, who had a team-high 18 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Manitoba setter Katreena Bentley had 45 assists and 23 digs for a double-double of her own, while also adding three kills.  Despite the loss, Cougars outside hitter Jessica Lerminiaux carried on her dominant performance from last night with a game-high 22 kills.

The Cougars came out swinging, taking a close first set 26-24. Lerminiaux had 10 kills in the opening set to lead the way for the Cougars.

In the second set, the Bisons jumped out to a 10-5 lead and never looked back. The Cougars closed the gap to two points but could not catch up as they dropped the set 25-18.

The third set was closer, as the Cougars battled to a 23-23 tie before the Bisons scored two straight points to take a 2-1 lead in sets.

The Bisons had control of the fourth set, leading by six points on four different occasions. They could not put the Cougars away easily however, as the Cougars fought all the way back from being down 23-17 to trail by just a single point at 23-22. That would be all Regina could muster as Bisons player Andi Almonte's kill on match point put the game away.

Almonte had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. The Bisons also got solid performances from Ella Gray (nine kills, nine digs) and libero Julia Arnold (23 digs).

Lerminiaux added 17 digs for a double-double performance. Cougars libero Sierra Parris-Kruger contributed a game-high 24 digs while setter Cassidy Klapak delivered 39 assists. The Cougars combo of Katie House and Devyn Grimsrud had six and eight blocks, respectively.

Both the Cougars (2-4) and the Bisons (3-5) will have the rest of 2021 off before resuming league play in the new year. The Cougars will host the Winnipeg Wesmen on January 14th while the Bisons will wait until the weekend after to host the same Wesmen team on January 21st.
