The University of Regina's women's soccer team won 2-0 over the Brandon Bobcats on Sunday afternoon in the Cougars final exhibition game at the U of R Field.

Two first years in Justine Arciaga and Nicole Klassen scored for the Cougars to lead the way. Arciaga scored on a beautiful high shot that flew over the goalkeeper. Klassen beat her defender on a nice through ball and finished with a commanding strike to the back of the net.

The Cougars played a 4-4-2 formation in their final tune-up game before the beginning of the regular season next week.

"We tried a new formation today so there are some adjustments in terms of looking at the new platforms and principles but I thought some of the younger players got some minutes today and did some great things," said Cougars interim head coach Rob McCaffrey. "It's just about building to next week which is obviously our season opener and we're really excited to continue in that process."

Cassandra De Amaral played well in goal for the Cougars today, making an excellent save in the early stages of the game to keep it tied 0-0. Kareena Andersen subbed in at keeper with 20 minutes left in the game and performed well, making a nice save. Both goalies combined for a clean sheet as the defense played a solid game to limit Brandon's chances.

"I thought our backline did well today, you know obviously when you keep a clean sheet that's always a positive so I thought our fullbacks played well," said Coach McCaffrey as he highlighted a few of the players today. "Someone like Justine Arciaga, a first year, scores the opening goal and I thought she put in a lot of work so she is someone that was effective and I think our holding midfield Jess Chow today did a really good job of commanding the midfield and organizing us in the defensive areas."

The Cougars begin their Canada West regular season on the road against the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday, September 10th.
