Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars throw it back in Gym 1, but fall to UBC Okanagan in opener

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team opened its 2022-23 conference schedule with a three-set loss to UBC Okanagan on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport's Gym 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC Okanagan hit a blistering .556 in the first set, which they won by a 25-12 count.
  • The Cougars led for large portions of the second set after a 5-0 run with Annika Hufnagel serving, but UBC Okanagan mounted a late 7-2 run which turned a 21-18 U of R lead into a 25-23 victory for the Heat.
  • The Cougars came out strong in the third set and built up an 11-6 advantage, but UBC Okanagan turned the tide with an 11-1 run. Nya Chiek almost singlehandedly got the Cougars back into it after reeling off four consecutive aces, but the Heat pulled away late for a match-clinching 25-20 victory.

NOTES
  • Chiek finished with five aces on the night, which ties for the second most by a U of R player in a three-set Canada West match. Ashlee Sandiford holds that mark with six aces during a match in 2019.
  • Tonight's match was the first time in over 10 years that the Cougars have played in Gym 1 and just the second time since the main gym in the CKHS was built in 2004

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will move back to their usual home for Saturday's match as they'll host UBC Okanagan starting at 4:00 in the main gym at the CKHS.
