Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars fall to MacEwan in Canada West opener

HEADLINE
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 7-5 loss to MacEwan on Friday in Edmonton in a game that marked the first Canada West contest of the season for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars held 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first period thanks to goals by Tyler Heidt and Jayden Davis, but MacEwan replied shortly after both markers and the two teams were tied 2-2 through 20 minutes.
  • MacEwan took its first lead of the game early in the second, then got goals from Kole Gable and Ethan Strang in a span of 1:46 to go up 5-2.
  • Davis scored his second of the game on a power play midway through the third, but MacEwan scored again two and a half minutes later on a Marc Pasemko goal that was the only shot to beat U of R relief goaltender Adam Evanoff.
  • Matt Culling and Scott Mickoski both scored late in the third to pull the Cougars to within one, but MacEwan's empty net goal with a minute left put away the win for the Griffins.

NOTES
  • Davis, Mickoski, Culling, and Jackson Doucet all had two-point nights for the Cougars.

UP NEXT
  • The Cougars and MacEwan will close out their two-game weekend set on Saturday afternoon in Edmonton. Puck drop is set for 3:00 PM.
