QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team scored three third-period goals and took a 4-2 win over Trinity Western on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trinity Western's Aidan Steinke scored the lone goal of the first period, but Jordan Borysiuk's first Canada West goal drew the Cougars even at 1-1 just two minutes into the second.
- A shorthanded goal by Kolby Johnson quickly restored the lead for the Spartans just three minutes after Borysiuk's goal.
- The Cougars faced a 2-1 deficit through 40 minutes, but pulled off the comeback with three unanswered goals in the final period. Kolton Shindle was assessed a double minor early in the period, and the Cougars not only killed off both power plays but also tied it up when Eric Pearce wired a shot to the top corner on a 2-on-1 late in Shindle's penalty.
- The game stayed tied until Trinity Western took a late slashing penalty. The Cougars took advantage, with Randen Schmidt setting up Ty Barnstable for a one-timer from the right faceoff circle for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Jakob Brook sealed the win with a late empty-net goal.
STANDINGS
The weekend sweep improves Regina's record to 2-2-2. The Cougars sit in sixth place in the early Canada West standings with six points.
NOTES
- Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars and stopped 30 of TWU's 32 shots.
- Pearce set up Brook's empty-net goal, giving him a two-point night in the win.
- Culling also assisted on Barnstable's winner. Culling now has five assists through the team's first six conference games.
NEXT UP
The Cougars are back in action next weekend with a U-Prairie Challenge home-and-home against Saskatchewan. They'll play the Huskies in Saskatoon on Friday night and at The Co-operators Centre in Regina on Saturday.
