• Regina dropped out of the Canada West postseason race after last week's 41-34 home loss to Manitoba. The Rams engineered an 11-play, 73-yard drive to tie up the game with just 2:23 to play, but the Bisons scored what would turn out to be the game-winning touchdown on the ensuing possession.
• UBC dropped three spots in this week's U SPORTS poll after a surprise road loss against a Calgary team which had entered the game winless for the season. But despite that loss, the Thunderbirds (4-2) are still very much in the hunt for a home playoff game and even a first-place finish in the Canada West standings.
APPEL MAKES HISTORY: Rookie returner
Kenton Appel is the reigning Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week after a spectacular 115-yard touchdown return off a missed field goal in the fourth quarter of last week's game against Manitoba. It was the first time in U of R history that a Rams player returned a missed field goal for a score and also broke the record for longest missed field goal return in school history, which Jamir Walker set at 86 yards back on Oct. 19, 2012.
HOMECOMING FOR SIEBEN: QB
Owen Sieben was 18-for-30 and finished with 234 passing yards last week against Manitoba as the first year pivot continued to effectively lead the Rams' offence. Sieben, who is putting up a strong bid for Canada West Rookie of the Year honours, ranks 10th in the nation in both passing yards per game (246.5) and completion percentage (64.8%). Saturday's game will mark the first time playing at the Canada West level in his home province for Sieben, who calls Langley home and played at Terry Fox Secondary in Port Coquitlam.
DOLANI RETURNS: After missing the Alberta game due to injury, DB
Dolani Robinson returned to the lineup last week and registered his sixth pass breakup of the season. Robinson, in his first year with the Rams after coming over from the Westshore Rebels, is tied for the Canada West lead in pass breakups and is also tied for third in all of U SPORTS in that category.
GALVAN RETURNS: K
Aldo Galvan missed almost all of the Week 4 game at Manitoba and didn't dress for the Week 5 game at Alberta due to an injury, but returned to the lineup for the Rams last weekend. Galvan leads U SPORTS in punting with an average of 45.8 yards on his 27 punts this season. Galvan will finish second in U of R history in career points scored (245 and counting) but has a chance to catch Perri Scarcelli for the school's all-time field goals record. Scarcelli had 56 in his five-year Rams career which spanned from 2005 to 2009, while Galvan enters Saturday's game with 52.
GROUND GAME: The Rams have been able to successfully establish the run in recent weeks and last week's outing against Manitoba was no exception.
Marshall Erichsen finished with 19 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, and also caught 3 passes for 35 yards and had a 26-yard kickoff return to finish with a game-high 172 all-purpose yards. Erichsen is now up to 399 rushing yards for the season and with a pair of 50-yard games could become the U of R's first 500-yard rusher since
Kyle Borsa had 613 in 2018.
BACK TO BC: Besides Sieben, the Rams are expected to have five other British Columbia products in the lineup including starting mac linebacker and team leader in tackles
Cameron Mah (Vancouver). LB
Alex Gagnon (Port Coquitlam), OL
Andrew Goldenthal (Vernon), LB
Colin McKellar (Vancouver), and DB
Brandon Wong (Port Coquitlam) will also dress for the Rams.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: While the Rams could still win out and get up to 3-5 for the season, they'd still be on the outside looking in for Canada West postseason purposes. They would lose a head-to-head tiebreak with Manitoba as the Bisons won both matchups between the two teams this year. The possibility of a three-way tiebreak between Calgary, Manitoba, and Regina still exists and the Bisons would also emerge from that group with the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot based on head-to-head results.
DRAFT REPORT: SB
D'Sean Mimbs, LB
Cameron Mah, and DB
Jackson Sombach all participated in the U SPORTS East-West Bowl earlier this year, a showcase which features (for the most part) players available for selection in the 2024 CFL Draft. Galvan, QB
Bryden O'Flaherty, OL
Matthew Hajewich, and DB
Gowrishan Aravinthan are also eligible.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Rams have 99 players on this year's roster, including 70 who call Saskatchewan home. The team also has 15 players from Alberta, 9 from British Columbia, 2 from Manitoba, 1 from Ontario (Robinson), 1 from Quebec (
Olivier Savard), and 1 from Mexico (Galvan).
