Manitoba prevails over Cougars in Canada West opener

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost in three straight sets to the University of Manitoba Bisons in both teams' first match of the 2023-24 conference schedule on Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Though Regina was within shouting distance of Manitoba at 16-11, the Bisons went on an 8-1 roll to take complete control of the first set. Although the Cougars picked up three consecutive points at the end, Manitoba closed out the set 25-15.
  • The Cougars started the second set off strong by capturing an 11-6 lead over the Bisons, but an 11-point run from the Bisons with Katreena Bentley on serve put the Cougars down 17-11. The Cougars battled back with a late 7-1 run of their own, but Manitoba prevailed 27-25.
  • Although the Cougars kept it close for the first part of the third set, Manitoba went on a 7-1 run to turn a 13-11 lead into a commanding 20-12 advantage. The Bisons won 25-18 to claim the win.

NOTES
  • Jordy McEachern had 10 kills, 4 of which came on the final 4 points for the Cougars in the close second set.
  • Fiona Little got her first Canada West start and had 5 kills and just 1 error on 13 attacks, giving her a team-leading .308 hitting percentage for Regina.
  • Playing in the first Canada West match of her career, U of R libero Reese Evjen had 11 digs to tie Manitoba's Julia Arnold for the match lead.
  • Claire Sheppard had a team-leading three service aces, tied Cassadi Klapak for the team high with four blocks, and also collected three kills and three digs.
  • Klapak also had 21 assists.

The Cougars will face the Bisons again on Saturday in Winnipeg at 2:00 PM (CDT).
