Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 10-ranked Cougars fall to Trinity Western in opener

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost 64-55 to Trinity Western on Friday night in the Cougars' Canada West season opener in Langley, B.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity Western led the entire way on Friday. The Spartans led 17-11 after the opening quarter and closed the opening half on a 10-1 run that turned a one-point game into a 38-28 TWU lead at the break.
  • The Spartans pushed the lead to 14 at two different points of the third quarter, but the Cougars hung around. They held TWU without a field goal for the first six and a half minutes of the fourth, but only scored one themselves during that time as both teams went cold down the stretch.
  • Regina went on a late 7-0 run that featured two buckets by rookie Ryenn Schutz and a three-pointer by Dayna Pearce that got the Cougars to within five with 1:19 to go, but that was as close as they'd come as Trinity Western hit free throws on the following two possessions to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Pearce scored a team-high 18 points and added 11 rebounds to collect a double-double.
  • Jade Belmore scored 17 and pulled down 12 boards.
  • Making her Canada West debut, Schutz scored 8 points and led all players with 15 rebounds.

NEXT UP
The two teams will clash again on Saturday in Langley. Game time is set for 4:00 PM (PST).
