Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late UFV run sinks Cougars in home opener

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team held a late lead over No. 7-ranked Fraser Valley, but the Cascades reeled off a 10-0 run which lifted the visitors to a 79-72 win over the Cougars on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fraser Valley led for nearly the entire first half and by as many as eight points, but the Cougars clamped down defensively and didn't allow a field goal for the final five minutes of the second quarter. They scored 11 straight points in that time, a run capped by a Maddy Seida three-pointer at the buzzer which put the Cougars up 36-33 at the half.
  • Eden Wells sparked a push by the Cougars in the third, first getting a steal and a fast-break layup before feeding Jade Belmore for a bucket on the next possession which gave the U of R its largest lead of the game at 47-39.
  • Fraser Valley went on a 9-1 run finished off by a Fania Taylor triple, helping the Cascades take a 58-56 lead into the fourth quarter. And though the Cougars quickly regained the lead in the final period and led as late as 70-67 with two and a half minutes to go, Fraser Valley's final push gave the Cascades their seventh win in a row to start the conference schedule.
  • Maddy Gobeil's three-pointer tied the game, then on the next two possessions UFV got buckets by Julia Tuchschere and Deanna Tuchscherer to go up by four. The Cascades were able to pull down three key offensive rebounds in the final minute, and three free throws in the dying seconds were enough to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Julia Tuchscherer and Maddy Gobeil finished as UFV's leading scorers with 19 points and 18 points, respectively.
  • Dayna Pearce led Regina (2-3) with 15 points while Belmore and Ryenn Schutz both scored 11. Schutz added 10 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season.

NEXT UP
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is again scheduled for 6:00 PM.
