QUICKLY
Jade Belmore's two free throws with just 4.1 seconds left in overtime helped lift the University of Regina's women's basketball team to a 78-76 victory over No. 7-ranked Fraser Valley on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fraser Valley threw an early punch with an 11-0 run in the first quarter, giving the visitors a 21-12 lead with just under three minutes to go in the period. But an 11-3 run for the Cougars capped by Kyu Fust's three-pointer got them right back into it, and the two teams stayed within a single score for the remainder of the first half with Regina taking a 34-32 lead into the break.
- The Cougars led for almost the entire third quarter after getting back-to-back threes from Jade Belmore and Kianna Wiens. Regina led 48-42 heading into the fourth and held the lead until UFV's Deanna Tuchscherer tied the game with a three just past the halfway mark of the quarter. Belmore immediately answered that three with one of her own to retake the lead, but Maddy Gobeil hit another big three for UFV a couple minutes later that put the Cascades up by one with two and a half minutes to go.
- Fraser Valley led by three in the final minute until Eden Wells hit the first of her two free throws with eight seconds to go. Wells missed the second, but Brenna Metz kept it alive and Belmore grabbed the rebound following Metz's miss and was fouled herself. Belmore calmly stepped up and drained two free throws to send the game to overtime.
- In the extra session, Dayna Pearce hit a huge three-pointer to put Regina up six with just under three minutes to go. Fraser Valley battled back and tied it up with a triple and a fast-break layup off a turnover, but Belmore was fouled with just under five seconds to go as she brought the ball up the floor. That put Belmore to the line, and she again hit both free throws to seal the win for the Cougars.
NOTES
- Belmore hit the 30-point barrier for the second time this season and the fourth time in her stellar three-season career at the U of R.
- Pearce finished with 12 points, Ryenn Schutz had 11, and Eden Wells scored 10.
- Belmore and Schutz both had double-doubles as Belmore also had 12 rebounds and Schutz pulled down 10.
- The Cougars improve to 3-3 while dealing Fraser Valley (7-1) its first loss of the Canada West schedule.
