Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars complete weekend sweep with 3-2 win over Calgary

QUICKLY
In a game that was a little tamer than Friday's 13-goal affair, the University of Regina's women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 3-2 road victory over Calgary on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calgary scored the lone goal of the first period on Sydney Mercier's third of the season.
  • The Cougars got on the board with a power play goal just shy of the midway mark of the second period when Paige Hubbard deflected Olivia Leggett's shot from the right circle.
  • Calgary restored the one-goal lead with a Courtney Kollman goal, but the Cougars responded just 56 minutes later with Shaylee Scraba's first of the campaign. Scraba took a pass from Lauren Focht, then lifted a backhand over Calgary goaltender Gabriella Durante's blocker to tie it up.
  • The Cougars got the game-winning goal midway through the third period. After collecting her first Canada West point with an assist in Friday's game, Julianne Girardin led a rush up ice, sent a pass to Hubbard, and then knocked home the rebound to score her first Canada West goal and put Regina up 3-2.

NOTES
  • The win improves Regina's record to 3-6-1. The Cougars are now tied for sixth place in the Canada West standings with Manitoba, and those two teams will clash twice in Winnipeg next weekend.
  • After getting the win in relief on Friday, Arden Kliewer started in net for the Cougars and stopped 27 of Calgary's 29 shots.
  • Leggett also assisted on Scraba's goal, giving her five helpers for the season.
  • Hubbard's two-point outing gives her a team-leading nine points. The fourth-year forward is on pace to smash her career high of 11 points, which she set last year in 26 games played.

NEXT UP
The Cougars and Manitoba will meet in a rare Thursday/Friday series next weekend in Winnipeg. Both of those games will face off at 7:00 PM.
