QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team burst out of the gates and led the entire way on Saturday night in an 82-40 win over Brandon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back. Brandon got its first bucket at the midway point of the first quarter and the Cougars closed the opening period on a 14-1 run to give them a commanding 26-7 lead.
- The second quarter was much the same with the Cougars outscoring Brandon by a 20-8 margin to take a 46-15 lead at the break. Regina continued to pull away from the Bobcats in the second half, scoring 25 points to Brandon's 14 in the third quarter and building the lead to as much as 49 in the fourth.
NOTES
- Ryenn Schutz had a huge game on the glass for the Cougars, scoring 6 points and leading all players with 18 rebounds. Schutz's 18 rebounds is tied for the third most by a U of R player since the Cougars joined Canada West, trailing only Brittany Read's herculean 29-rebound performance against Saint Mary's during the 2013 CIS Championship and Jessica Lynch's 19-rebound effort at Brandon in 2008. Chelsea Cassano, Read (three times), and Alexi Rowden have also pulled down 18 rebounds in a Canada West game. It's also the most rebounds ever registered by a rookie Cougar in a Canada West game.
- Four different Cougars finished in double figures in scoring, led by Dayna Pearce's 15 points.
- Jade Belmore scored 14 points, Eden Wells had 12, and Kianna Wiens finished with 11.
- Reetta Tulkki led Brandon with 14 points.
