Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Power play clicks, but Cougars fall 6-3 to UBC in weekend opener

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to UBC on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring just four minutes in when a Brennan Riddle shot from the right point deflected off Scott Mickoski and in.
  • UBC replied just three minutes later on Jake Kryski's goal to tie it up.
  • The Thunderbirds got goals from Cyle McNabb and Sasha Mutala in the span of 37 seconds early in the second to take a two-goal lead, but the Cougars battled back with a pair of power play goals. Tyler Heidt scored on a one-timer from the right circle, then Jackson Doucet wired a shot home from the high slot to tie it up with the Cougars on a 5-on-3 advantage.
  • Scott Atkinson scored what would be the game-winning goal on the power play shortly after Doucet's goal, and Sam Huo and Jordan Sandhu both scored in the third for UBC as the Thunderbirds sealed their 11th consecutive victory.

NOTES
  • The Cougars got some help on the out-of-town scoreboard in the form of a resounding MacEwan loss to Calgary on Friday. They can clinch a playoff berth on Saturday with a win over UBC, or could also clinch with a MacEwan regulation loss combined with a Manitoba loss to Alberta.
  • Regina ended up 3-for-7 on the power play, while UBC was 1-for-6.
  • Adam Evanoff made 41 saves on Friday as UBC held a 47-36 advantage in shots.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and the Thunderbirds will close out the weekend with a Saturday matinée in Vancouver. Game time is set for 3:00 PT.
