Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars push Alberta, but lose to Pandas in four sets

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team battled tough on Senior Night, but fell in four sets to Alberta on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set featured five tie scores and four lead changes, the latest of which came right at the end as the teams traded set points. Alberta had a chance to end the set at 25-24 only to have the Cougars reply with back-to-back kills by Jordy McEachern and Claire Sheppard. Alberta's Laila Johnston then stepped up with kills on the next two points, then clinched the set for the Pandas with a block which gave them a 28-26 win.
  • The Cougars then put forth their finest effort of the weekend in the second set. They hit .297 as a team and scored the final four points of the set, giving them a 25-23 win which was sealed by an Annika Hufnagel ace.
  • Alberta, in a battle for the final Canada West playoff spot, dialed it up in the third set by hitting .522 as a team and cruising to a 25-18 win. The Pandas then put away the four-set win with a 25-21 victory in the fourth.

NOTES
  • Laila Johnston was spectacular for Alberta, leading all players with 27 kills while hitting .367 for the match.
  • Bailey Balaberda had 15 kills for Regina and fell just short of the double-double with 9 digs.
  • Claire Sheppard had 12 kills and just 2 errors on 16 attacks, finishing with a blistering .625 hitting percentage for the Cougars.
  • Jordy McEachern added 10 kills and 7 digs.

THE SENIORS
  • Hufnagel was great on Senior Night, dishing out 33 assists while adding 12 digs, 3 kills, 2 aces, and a pair of blocks. The U of R's other graduating player, Kaylyn Brown, finished with a team-leading five blocks.
