Rams fall 26-7 to Manitoba in non-conference opener

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams dropped a 26-7 decision to Manitoba on Thursday night in a non-conference game at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba took a 9-0 lead at halftime thanks to field goals by three different players in the second quarter.
  • The Bisons scored the first touchdown of the game on the first possession of the second half, but Regina replied immediately. Owen Sieben connected with Jevon Garwood for a 57-yard catch-and-run, and after a 10-yard rush by Garwood and a 10-yard catch by Apete Tuiloma the Rams finished off the drive with a 1-yard run by Garwood.
  • The Bisons scored on their next possession with a 9-play, 102-yard drive that was finished off by a 22-yard touchdown catch by Jake Roger, then scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a 15-yard chip-shot field goal by Maya Turner.

LEADERS
  • Garwood not only scored the team's only touchdown of the game, but led the Rams with 89 all-purpose yards.
  • Emmett Steadman caught a pair of passes for 44 yards and also had a 20-yard kickoff return to finish with 64 all-purpose yards.
  • Rams quarterback Noah Pelletier started and finished 7-for-16 for 94 yards, with his longest completion coming on a 28-yard throw to Steadman.
  • Sieben was a perfect 6-for-6 in his first outing in a Rams uniform, finishing with 89 passing yards while also rushing 2 times for 14 yards.
  • Riley Richards, who switched from offensive line to defensive line this offseason, was credited with a seven-yard sack that was set up by heavy pressure from Cody Ellingson.
  • Josh White and Garret Hatchard also had a tackle for loss for the Rams, while Max Polischuk, Dolani Robinson, and Jaxon Runge all had a pass breakup.
  • With Aldo Galvan sitting out Thursday's game due to a minor injury, newcomer Isaac Wegner and receiver Andrew Sweeney handled punting duties. Wegner impressed with five punts for an average of 41.8 yards, including a 55-yard bomb in the opening quarter.

NEXT UP
