Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams suffer season-opening defeat to UBC

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams opened the Canada West schedule with a 25-10 home setback to the No. 9-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two opening-quarter field goals, UBC scored its lone touchdown of the game five minutes into the second quarter on a 61-yard catch-and-run from Garrett Rooker to Sam Davenport.
  • A huge 19-yard sack by Brayden Wagg set up Regina's only points of the first half, as UBC conceded a safety on the ensuing play and the visitors went into halftime with a 13-2 advantage.
  • UBC's Kieran Flannery-Fleck hit field goals on three consecutive UBC possessions, but the Rams responded with their best drive of the game.
  • Bryden O'Flaherty came off the bench and proceeded to connect on five of his first six pass attempts, helping launch a 10-play, 75-yard drive that was finished off by Noah Pelletier who came back on in a short-yardage situation and scored on a one-yard play-action keeper. O'Flaherty then hit Bennett Stusek with a nice pass in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it a 12-point game.
  • The Rams forced a two-and-out on the next possession and got well into UBC territory courtesy of two O'Flaherty passes and a 15-yard Thunderbirds penalty for roughing the passer, but a sack and two incomplete passes but an end to the drive and another Flannery-Fleck field goal all but put the game out of reach.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • O'Flaherty came on in the fourth quarter and was 10-for-16 for 94 yards.
  • Bennett Stusek and D'Sean Mimbs tied for the game high with six catches apiece. Mimbs led all players with 92 receiving yards.
  • Wagg and Chopper Hippe had the U of R's two sacks, which came on back-to-back plays in the second quarter and led directly to Regina's safety. Garret Hatchard also had a tackle for loss for the Rams defence, while Dolani Robinson was credited with Regina's lone pass breakup on a nice play in the end zone in the opening quarter.
  • Aldo Galvan was brilliant for the Rams, punting 7 times for an average of 49.9 yards per kick including a 62-yard bomb in the opening quarter.
  • Stusek collected his 100th career reception in the first quarter, becoming the 14th U of R player to hit that milestone.

NEXT UP
The Rams are back at it next Friday, Sept. 8 with a Week 2 road game at Saskatchewan (1-0).
