Wiens, Belmore lift Cougars to Friday win over UNBC

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team got off to a hot start and went on to an 80-56 home victory over the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took control early with an 18-4 first-quarter run that saw all six field goals scored by six different players, starting with a Maddy Seida triple and finishing with a Dayna Pearce three.
  • The big run helped the Cougars out to a 32-16 lead after the opening period, but UNBC had a response in the second. The Timberwolves went on an 11-3 run with Amrit Manak scoring eight of those points, helping the visitors get the Regina lead down to single digits as the Cougars took a 44-35 advantage into halftime.
  • The Cougars opened the second half with six consecutive points and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way, and a 12-0 run early in the fourth quarter featuring three-pointers by both Cara Misskey and Kianna Wiens all but put the game away for the Cougars.
