Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars grind out road win over No. 5 Alberta

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team outlasted the No. 5-ranked Alberta Pandas for a 57-52 road victory on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Claire Signatovich's layup on Alberta's second possession of the game put the Pandas up 2-0, but that would turn out to be Alberta's only lead of the game. The Cougars replied with a Cara Misskey three-pointer which started a 9-0 Regina run, helping them take a 22-12 lead after the opening quarter.
  • The Cougars led by as many as 15 points in the second, but Alberta closed the half on a 9-2 run and Regina's lead was cut to 33-25 heading into the break.
  • After an even third quarter, the Cougars threatened to pull away for good after scoring the first seven points of the fourth to go up 51-38. But Alberta scored the next 10 points to make it a one-possession game, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
  • Regina's last field goal was a Jade Belmore three-pointer with two and a half minutes to go, but the Cougars managed to hang on for the win. Alberta's Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma had a three-point attempt with just seconds to go that would have tied it, but it rimmed out and Cara Misskey was able to grab the rebound and hit a pair of free throws to seal the win after she was fouled.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore and Cara Misskey both tied for the game high with 16 points for Regina. Belmore also led all players with 12 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the Canada West schedule.
  • The Cougars improve their Canada West record to 11-4 with the victory. They entered Friday ranked No. 8 in Canada West in RPI - which will determine postseason seeding - but should leapfrog Trinity Western for the No. 7 spot thanks to the win over the Pandas.
  • Easton-Ihediohanma led Alberta (10-5) with 14 points.

QUOTABLE
"We had a great defensive effort tonight. After the first quarter we struggled to score against a tough defensive team. Getting a win on the road against a top-five team is always hard to do, and I'm proud of the effort and resilience our team showed tonight." - Cougars head coach Dave Taylor

NEXT UP
The Cougars will face Alberta again in Edmonton on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for an hour earlier, at 5:00 PM (MST).
