QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team fell behind Manitoba early and couldn't recover on Saturday, falling 74-67 to the Bisons in Winnipeg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Manitoba threw the game's first punch with a 16-2 run in the first quarter, turning what had been a two-point Cougar lead into a 12-point advantage for the Bisons and helping them take a 23-13 lead after the opening period.
- The Bisons led 43-36 at the break and continued to lead until Dayna Pearce's three-pointer tied it at 50-50 with three minutes to go in the third.Â
- Another three-pointer by Pearce midway through the fourth gave the Cougars their first lead since the opening moments of the game, but Emerson Martin drilled a three on the ensuing Manitoba possession. That triple not only gave Manitoba the lead back, but kickstarted a 10-0 run which put the Bisons in full control. The Cougars cut the lead down to four with just over a minute to go, but weren't able to get any closer despite two chances to make it a one-possession game in the final minute.
NOTES
- Martin and Lauren Bartlett led Manitoba with 25 and 21 points, respectively.
- Jade Belmore scored a team-high 20 points for Regina, which falls to 6-4 with the loss. Pearce finished with three three-pointers and 11 points.
- The loss was the Cougars' first setback to Manitoba since 2007, snapping a streak of 36 consecutive victories over the Bisons.
