The Rams/Huskies rivalry

A look back at a few Rams/Huskies battles

10/17/2024 8:30:00 PM

The Regina Rams and the Saskatchewan Huskies have one of the best rivalries in U SPORTS, which has existed long before the days of the U-Prairie Challenge. With the two teams set to face off on Saturday afternoon, here's a look back at some of their most iconic matchups.

HUSKIES SCORE LATE TD TO BEAT RAMS 10-9 (Sept. 11, 2009)
This early-season bout saw the Huskies defend home field on a late pass with 72 seconds left that would end up being the lone touchdown in the game. Rams quarterback Marc Mueller, now the offensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, completed 23 of his 40 passes for 296 yards.

Current Rams head coach Mark McConkey led the team in receiving with 7 receptions for 72 yards, while Bruce Anderson, now the Rams' recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, finished with a team-high 8 tackles. It was also offensive line coach Brett Jones' first career start at the university level.

RAMS DEFEAT HUSKIES 31-9 TO ADVANCE TO THE HARDY CUP (Nov. 2, 2012)
The last time the two teams matched up in the playoffs was in the 2012 Hardy Cup semifinal.

After going into halftime with a slim 10-9 lead, the Rams dominated the second half, shutting out the Huskies while scoring 21 points of their own. Mueller threw for 393 yards and three touchdowns and was backed up by now-Rams quarterback coach Frankie Gray. Slotback Landon Buch had a career game, finishing with 6 catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yard TD early in the fourth quarter to put the Rams up three scores.

The Rams advanced to the Hardy Cup for the fifth time in school history, but would go on to lose to the Calgary Dinos 38-14.

RAMS WIN SHOOTOUT IN FRONT OF RECORD CROWD AT NEW MOSAIC STADIUM (Oct. 1, 2016)
This more recent contest was the first game ever played at new Mosaic Stadium. The Rams outscored the Huskies 37-29 in front of 16,500 fans, which was a Canada West attendance record in any sport. Quarterback Noah Picton threw for 370 yards and four touchdown passes, including two to his cousin and current Saskatchewan Roughrider Mitchell Picton.

Noah would go on to win the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2016, becoming the only player in Rams history to do so.

Receiver Ryan Schienbein had one of his best games in the horns, catching 13 of Picton's passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, including a 60 yard bomb early in the third quarter. Schienbein is now a member of the Rams board.

Linebacker Danny Nesbitt had two interceptions and five total tackles for the Regina defence.
