Cougars open 2024-25 with road setback to Saskatchewan

Kesslering scores first Canada West goal for Cougars

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team opened up the 2024-25 Canada West season with a 7-1 road loss to Saskatchewan on Friday night in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring early when Ben Tkachuk took advantage of a turnover in the Cougar zone and snapped a shot from the slot high blocker to put the Huskies up just under three minutes into the game.
  • Three more Saskatchewan goals followed in the first with Cade Hayes, Raphael Pelletier, and Chantz Petruic all scoring to put the home team up 4-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Dawson Holt added to the Saskatchewan lead with a power play goal early in the second.
  • In the late stages of the second, a pair of newcomers combined to score what would turn out to be the U of R's lone goal of the contest when Noah Wills slipped a pass over to Steven Kesslering for the Niagara University transfer's first Canada West goal.
  • Saskatchewan got two more late goals as Carter Stebbings and Petruic both scored in the final five minutes to push the lead to 7-1.

NOTES
  • Saskatchewan held a 33-25 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies were 2-for-3 on the power play while the Cougars finished 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
  • Regina's Jackson Fellner, a transfer from Alvernia University, started his first Canada West game and made 26 saves.
