Cougars win home opener in four over Calgary

Grimsrud leads Cougars with 14 kills; McEachern, Krausher both put down 11

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won its home opener on Friday night with a four-set victory over the Calgary Dinos in front of 535 fans at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calgary sprinted out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set, but the Cougars started the comeback with four consecutive points with Samantha Krausher on serve on a run that was punctuated by Devyn Grimsrud and Piper Harkness combining on back-to-back blocks. The Cougars then had five straight points with Grimsrud serving, capping an 11-3 run that turned Calgary's six-point lead into a 19-17 lead for Regina. The Dinos quickly tied it up, but another 5-0 run for Regina – this time with Jordy McEachern serving – put the home side up for good and the Cougars opened the match with a 25-21 win.
  • The Cougars continued that momentum into the second, scoring the first six points of the set as Cassadi Klapak went on an extended serving run. Regina held a comfortable lead for most of the set until Calgary responded with a 7-2 run coming out of a timeout which made the score 20-18 for the Cougars, but the U of R took three of the next four points and went on to another 25-21 victory.
  • The third set was all Calgary. The Dinos hit .500 as a team with 16 kills and just 4 errors on 24 attacks, taking a 25-19 win and sending the match to a fourth set.
  • But Regina bolted out of the gates in the fourth set by taking seven of the first eight points and then went on a 5-0 run with Harkness serving to take a commanding 12-2 lead. The Cougars clinched the match in style, with Harkness again serving Regina to five straight points and a big block by rookie middle Zoey Thompson giving the U of R a 25-14 victory.

NOTES
  • Three different Cougars finished with double-digit kills, including Grimsrud with a team-leading 14. McEachern and Krausher both finished with 11 kills in the win.
  • Regina improves to 2-3 with the win as the Cougars sit in a tie for sixth place in the early Canada West standings.
