Cougars settle for second place in Wesmen Classic

Guelph beats Regina 62-45 in tournament final

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team settled for a second-place finish in the Wesmen Classic after a 62-45 setback to No. 9-ranked Guelph on Monday night in the tournament championship game at the Duckworth Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams played to a dead heat in the first quarter as they were tied 15-15 after the opening period, but it was all Guelph in the second as the Gryphons outscored Regina 20-9 to take a 35-24 lead into the half.
  • The Cougars scored the opening two buckets of the fourth quarter as baskets by Maddy Seida and Jade Belmore brought Regina to within five points at 47-42, but it was all Guelph from there. The Gryphons scored 15 of the game's final 18 points to pull away down the stretch to earn the victory.

NOTES
  • Belmore finished as Regina's leading scorer with 19 points and also added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Seida and Cara Misskey both scored five points for the Cougars.
  • Guelph (12-5) was powered by a 27-point performance from Renee Armstrong.
  • The Cougars' record against U SPORTS teams falls to 19-6 with the loss.

NEXT UP
  • The U of R will start its home-heavy second-half of the Canada West schedule on Jan. 10 and Jan. 11 against MacEwan at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
  • Beginning with that series against the Griffins, 7 of the Cougars' 10 games in January and February will be played at the CKHS.
