Rams Season Previews: Quarterbacks

8/21/2024 10:00:00 AM

The Rams have five quarterbacks on the roster this year led by Owen Sieben, last season's Canada West Rookie of the Year, but quarterbacks coach Frankie Gray loves what he sees from the entire group.

"Overall, this is one of the best QB rooms I have been fortunate enough to coach," Gray said. "We look forward to the men pushing each other to get better each and every day."

Sieben taking the reins of the Rams offence last year wasn't exactly the plan in his first year with the program. But he dressed for Week 3 with Noah Pelletier injured, then went into the game in the second quarter and led the team to a come-from-behind win over Calgary. And he continued to perform from there, finishing second in Canada West and 10th in the nation with a 64.6% completion percentage. Sieben became just the second Rams player to earn top rookie honours from Canada West.

"Owen brings a tremendous amount of intelligence, poise, and athleticism to the position," said Rams quarterbacks coach Frankie Gray. "We look forward to him building off of what he was able to accomplish last year as a rookie."

Pelletier gives the Rams experience and leadership behind Sieben. The team's starting pivot in 2022 and for the first two games of 2023, Pelletier returned from his injury last year to serve as the team's short-yardage quarterback.

"Noah is such a leader on this team through his commitment, actions, and team-first mentality that our other players rally around," Gray said.

Left-handed newcomer Trey Jones joins the group from the Langley Rams. He brings a dynamic set of skills to the quarterback room, with Gray expecting to show the athleticism and mobility that Jones displayed during his four seasons of CJFL football.

The Rams also welcome two quarterbacks right from high school as Saskatoon's Carter Casey (St. Joseph HS) and Weyburn's Conner Kerr (Weyburn Comprehensive) join the fold.

"Carter and Conner are two young guys who have shown incredible commitment to learning the playbook and the team culture," Gray said. "These guys both have a chance to be future leaders and contributors on and off the field."
