Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Power play lifts Mount Royal to shutout win over Cougars

MRU goes 8-for-11 with man advantage

QUICKLY
Mount Royal scored eight of its nine goals on the power play in a 9-0 home win over the Regina Cougars in a Canada West men's hockey game at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MRU opened the scoring by converting on its first power play of the game after the Cougars were whistled for too many men. Josh Tarzwell converted that one, and just four minutes later Mount Royal added another when Kyle Walker scored just six seconds after Christian Riemer was assessed a holding penalty.
  • It was still a 2-0 game at the first intermission, but Mount Royal blew it wide open in the second. Justin Lies scored another power play goal before Tarzwell made it 4-0 with what would be the only even-strength goal of the contest. Tarzwell then scored two power play goals to secure a natural hat trick, and Robbie Holmes added another with MRU on a 4-on-3 to make it 7-0 heading into the third.
  • The barrage of power play goals continued in the final stanza. Vaughn Watterodt got one early in the third, and Blake Stevenson capped the scoring with one final goal late in the third.

NOTES
  • Mount Royal finished 8-for-11 on the power play and had a 57-16 advantage in shots.
  • Tarzwell (4 goals, 1 assist) and Clay Hanus (5 assists) both had five-point nights for Mount Royal in the win.

NEXT UP
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Calgary with puck drop scheduled for 5:00 PM (MT).
