Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars push No. 1 Alberta, but top-ranked Pandas take two in Canada West play

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team played No. 1-ranked Alberta tough for much of the weekend, but the Pandas came away with three-set sweeps over the Cougars on both Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

FRIDAY NOTES
  • A pair of Jordy McEachern service aces helped the Cougars sprint out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set, but Alberta called a timeout and responded with an 11–3 run to take the lead. The Pandas later broke an 18–18 tie with six straight points and closed out a 25–21 win.
  • The second set saw the Cougars battle back from a 17-14 deficit by taking six of the next eight points on a run which included a pair of Samantha Krausher kills. Alberta again responded out of a timeout, finishing on a 6–1 run to take another 25-21 victory.
  • The third set followed a similar script. Bailey Balaberda put down a kill to put the Cougars up 18-15, forcing another Alberta timeout. The Pandas finished on a 10-4 run to clinch the match with a 25–22 win.
  • Krausher led all players with 13 kills for the Cougars, while Cassadi Klapak recorded a double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs. McEachern had 7 kills, all 5 of the U of R's aces, and a match-high 13 digs.
  • Balaberda played in her first Canada West match since suffering an injury in the opening set of the 2024-25 conference season. The fourth-year left side finished with four kills on just six attacks.

SATURDAY NOTES
  • Alberta raced out to a 16-6 lead in the opening set and cruised to a 25-17 victory. The Cougars played their best set of the night in the second, pulling within striking distance with four straight points midway through the frame. Regina was still within one at 23-22, but Alberta put the Cougars away with two straight points and won 25-22.
  • The third set was all Pandas as the visitors took a 25-11 win to claim their second three-set win in as many nights over Regina.
  • Krausher led all players with 11 kills and added 6 digs for the Cougars, while Klapak dished out 17 assists and had a team-leading 9 digs.

POSTSEASON RACE
  • The Cougars move to 4-10 on the season and remain in 11th place in the Canada West standings. Regina is one win behind UBC Okanagan (5–9) for the final postseason berth and one win ahead of Winnipeg (3–9).

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars have a bye week upcoming before playing two consecutive road weekends at Brandon (Jan. 23/24) and at Trinity Western (Jan. 30/31). They'll finish off Canada West play at home against Saskatchewan on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.
