Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars travel to Brandon; end up with weekend split against Bobcats

Regina wins in five on Friday, Bobcats reply in straight sets on Saturday

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's volleyball team overcame Brandon for a five-set victory on Friday, but suffered a straight-sets setback on Saturday to the Bobcats at the Healthy Living Centre on the BU campus.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars overcame an 18-11 deficit in the first set with the assistance of Piper Harkness, who had three aces while serving seven times to help get the road team back level at 18-18. Regina eventually came away with a 27-25 victory thanks to back-to-back Jordy McEachern kills.
  • Brandon came back with 25-19 and 25-23 victories in the second and third sets, but the Cougars forced a deciding set with a 25-21 win in the fourth. In the fifth set, the Cougars took control with six consecutive points with Zoey Thompson on serve and cruised to a 15-7 match-clinching win.
  • Samantha Krausher led the Cougars in both kills and digs in the win. She had 13 kills and 17 digs for a big double-double while also collecting 4 blocks.
  • McEachern finished with 11 kills and 16 digs, while Harkness finished with 8 kills, 7 blocks, and 5 aces in the victory.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Brandon jumped out to an early lead with 25-18 and 25-15 wins in the opening two sets.
  • It looked as though the Cougars were well on their way to a win in the third after jumping out to 9-2 and 14-5 leads, but Brandon chipped away at the lead and a 4-1 run by the Bobcats got them to within 23-22. Krausher's final kill of the night put the Cougars up 24-22 but Brandon evaded both set points, took the lead with a Cassidy Hauta ace, and then clinched the match with a Brynn Wildeboer kill that gave the home side a 26-24 win.
  • Krausher again led the Cougars in kills, finishing with 12. Anna Schultz added 10 kills for Regina.
  • Wildeboer led Brandon with 12 kills.

POSTSEASON RACE
  • The Cougars (5-11) are one of four teams mired in a tie for Canada West's final two postseason berths with MacEwan, UBC Okanagan, and Winnipeg also at 5-11.
  • Canada West's first tiebreaker is international points, which sees teams receive three points for a win in three or four sets and two points for a five-set win. Losers of five-set matches receive a single point. UBC Okanagan currently occupies ninth place in the standings thanks to their 18 points with Winnipeg in 10th (17), MacEwan in 11th (16), and Regina in 12th (13).

NEXT UP
  • Likely needing at least two wins in their final four matches to qualify for the Canada West postseason, the Cougars will head to the West Coast next weekend to battle Trinity Western. TWU will head into the weekend with an 11-5 Canada West record and ranked just outside the U SPORTS Top 10.
