Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Dyer leads Cougars to road split with No. 4 Mount Royal

Veteran forward scores first three goals of the season to help Cougars pick up two points

QUICKLY
  • Kaylee Dyer's three-goal weekend helped the University of Regina's women's hockey team come away with a weekend road split with No. 4-ranked Mount Royal in Calgary. MRU outlasted Regina 4-3 on Friday, but the Cougars came back with a critical 2-1 win on Saturday.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars opened the scoring on a nice effort by rookie Brooke Fofonoff who blocked a shot from the left point, carried the puck up ice, and spun around to set up Maggie Kate Fitzpatrick in the slot. Fitzpatrick fired a hard shot past MRU goalie Scout Anderson for her second of the season.
  • MRU scored the only other goal of the first period on a power play marker by Kiana McNinch.
  • Dyer put the Cougars back into the lead with her first goal of the year after she won a faceoff and then deflected a Quinn McLaren shot past Anderson.
  • But Mount Royal struck twice in the span of 81 seconds following Dyer's goal as Sydney Benko and Jori Hansen-Young both scored to put the home side up 3-2.
  • Bailey McMaster's first goal as a Cougar tied it up at 3-3 just before the second intermission, but Mount Royal got a Jordyn Hutt power play goal early in the third which stood up as the game winner.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dyer opened the scoring in Saturday's 2-1 win in the final minute of the first period, snapping a shot from the right faceoff dot to give the Cougars the lead heading into the first intermission.
  • Dyer's second goal came shortly after play resumed following a lengthy delay while an injured Mount Royal player was attended to. Her third goal of the weekend was a carbon copy of her Friday goal as she won a faceoff, went to the net, and deflected an Olivia Leggett point shot to put the Cougars up 2-0.
  • Julia Duke scored for Mount Royal in the final minute of the second, but that was the last goal of the game. MRU held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the third period alone and 43-17 for the game, but Regina goalie Amy Swayze was brilliant and stopped 42 of those shots to earn her fifth victory of the season.

POSTSEASON RACE
  • The two points on Saturday are critical for the Cougars as they continue to chase Saskatchewan and Manitoba for the final playoff spot in Canada West's East Division.
  • Saskatchewan (9-9-4) is currently third in the standings with 22 points with Manitoba (8-9-5) just behind in fourth with 21. The Cougars (7-11-4) sit just four points back of the Huskies.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will now prepare for their most critical four-game stretch of the season as they face the two teams they need to reel in for the third and final East Division postseason berth.
  • The team plays Saskatchewan in a home-and-home next weekend with games on Friday in Regina and on Saturday in Saskatoon, then host Manitoba on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7 at The Co-operators Centre.
