Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars draw, lose close match in final homestand of 2026

Women's soccer ties Alberta 0-0 on Saturday, falls 1-0 to MacEwan on Sunday

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's soccer team closed out its 2026 home schedule over the weekend at the U of R Field, playing Alberta to a scoreless draw on Saturday before falling 1-0 to MacEwan in a tightly contested match on Senior Day Sunday.

SATURDAY: ALBERTA 0, COUGARS 0
  • Alberta had the southwest wind at its back in the opening half, and the Pandas generated three shots on net in the first 20 minutes. That included a header from close range by Andie Shimoda in the 10th minute that Regina goalkeeper Peyton Magnuson turned aside with a nice save.
  • The Cougars had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 64th minute following an Alberta turnover, but Freya Millar's shot sailed just wide to the right.
  • Magnuson came up with another big save in the 88th minute, diving to her left to deny Alberta's Kaitlyn Roque on a shot from near the penalty spot. The shutout was the fourth of Magnuson's career, moving the second-year goalkeeper into a tie for fifth in U of R history.

SUNDAY: MacEWAN 1, COUGARS 0
  • Despite the 1-0 final score, Sunday's match featured several quality scoring chances at both ends of the pitch.
  • MacEwan broke through for the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute when Ivy Kunn took a pass from Brynn Hobal, beat a Regina defender, and scored her third goal of the season to put the visiting Griffins in front.
  • Regina's best opportunities came in the 58th minute. Hadiza Kasim had a chance from inside the penalty area, but MacEwan goalkeeper Sabrina Alexander made the save. Savana Caliguiri collected the ball following the clearance and was fouled from behind, setting up a free kick in a dangerous position. Mikaela De Luca sent the ensuing kick towards the far side of the net, but Alexander punched the ball away.
  • Cassidy Fedoruk made her first start of the season in goal for the Cougars and finished with seven saves.
  • The Cougars honoured graduating players Mackenzie Albert, Kareena Andersen, and Fedoruk following Sunday's match.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars (1-10-1) will close out their 2026 season next weekend with two road matches against Manitoba (3-7-2). Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 PM on Friday and Saturday night in Winnipeg.
