Cougars pick up 10 medals at Canada West Championships

MacLean wins 3000; Pritchard, Adebogun pick up multiple medals on women's side

  • The University of Regina's track & field teams combined for 10 medals over the weekend at the 2026 Canada West Championships at the Saskatoon Field House.

MacLEAN GOLDEN, COUGARS ONE-TWO IN 3000
  • Friday night's 3000-metre run on the men's side saw Brett MacLean and Ian Teichler pull away from the pack. MacLean claimed gold with a time of 8:26.60 with Teichler just behind, who picked up silver in 8:28.81. Alec Teichler also placed seventh to pick up a pair of points for the Cougars in that race.

PRITCHARD PICKS UP THREE MEDALS, SETS SCHOOL RECORD
  • Shelaine Pritchard led the Cougars on the women's side with three medals and scored 26 of Regina's 60 points at the meet. She picked up silver in both the long jump and the shot put, and claimed bronze in the 60-metre hurdles while breaking her own U of R record with a time of 8.29 seconds in the final. Pritchard also scored four points for the Cougars with a fifth-place finish in the 60-metre dash.

ADEBOGUN WINS SILVER, BRONZE IN THROWS
  • Third-year thrower Faith Adebogun had a breakout meet for the Cougars, winning her first two Canada West medals with a silver in the weight throw and a bronze in the shot put. Adebogun's throw of 12.83 metres on her first attempt was a massive personal best and the first time she had broken the 12-metre mark in the event.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kaidyn Keith won her second consecutive bronze medal in the triple jump, scoring six points for the Cougars after her top jump of 11.99 metres landed her in third place.
  • Sprinters Queen Clayton and Heidi Branning also scored points for the Cougars. Clayton was fifth in the 300-metre dash (39.38 s) while Branning placed seventh in the 60-metre dash (7.66 s).
  • The Cougars finished in fifth place in the team standings with a total of 60 points.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • The 4x200-metre relay team consisting of Adam Sieben, Femi Akinloye, Colby Halliday, and Brett Franklin won silver, finishing in a time of 1:28.24.
  • Akinloye also secured a medal in the 60-metre dash, finishing with bronze and a time of 6.75 seconds in the final. Sieben also qualified for the final in the 60 and scored a pair of points for the Cougars with a seventh-place finish (6.83 s).
  • Andrew Benko placed fifth in the shot put, scoring four points thanks to his top throw of 13.92 metres in the event.
  • James Weimer scored a total of 4007 points in the heptathlon, putting him in sixth place and picking up three points for the Cougars.
  • Tutu Daldum (high jump) and Alec Teichler (1500-metre run) also chipped in with eighth-place finishes which scored one point each for the U of R.
  • The men's team also finished in fifth place in the team standings with a total of 52 points.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will finish off the season at the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships two weekends from now at the University of Manitoba's James Daly Fieldhouse. Adebogun, Clayton, Keith, Pritchard, and the 4x200 team are expected to represent the Cougars on the women's side while Akinloye, Benko, Sieben, Alec Teichler, Ian Teichler, Daniel Eiswerth, and both the 4x200 and 4x800 relay squads should compete for the U of R in the men's competition.
