Cougars sweep MacEwan, jump to sixth in Prairie Division

Regina, Fraser Valley will meet in play-in game next Friday at Alberta

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team won its third and fourth consecutive games with 89-71 and 85-54 road victories over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday and Saturday in Edmonton. 

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • Friday's win clinched a playoff berth for the Cougars and Saturday's victory moved them past Brandon for sixth place in Canada West's Prairie Division. Regina will enter the postseason as the conference's No. 11 seed in the single-elimination bracket.
  • The Cougars will travel back to Edmonton next weekend for a Canada West play-in game against Fraser Valley on Friday afternoon. The winner will advance to the Canada West quarterfinals and meet host Alberta on Saturday afternoon.
  • Winnipeg, Victoria, and UBC are the other hosts for the opening weekend of the postseason.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The opening game of the weekend was tight until the Cougars poured it on late. Regina trailed by one at the half and led by three after three quarters, but opened the fourth on a huge 23-4 run that gave the visitors control of the contest.
  • Ben Kamba led the Cougars with an impressive 32-point night that saw him go 11-for-13 from the field including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Kamba also had seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals in the win.
  • Isaiah Bay was brilliant off the bench for Regina, ending up with 22 points in 22 minutes played. Bay was 8-for-13 from the field, hit four of his six three-point attempts, and also added five rebounds and three assists.
  • Cade Mather added 10 points and 7 rebounds for Regina while Gurech Gurech collected 9 points and 7 boards.
  • Favour Igbinyemi led MacEwan with 22 points.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cougars burst out to an early double-digit lead as Gurech Gurech, Lodie Kenyi, and Kamba all hit triples on consecutive possessions. Regina led 29-14 after the opening quarter, pushed the lead to 57-28 at the break, and cruised to an eventual 31-point margin of victory.
  • Kenyi led the Cougars with 26 points. He was 11-for-14 from the field and also picked up five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
  • Sufyan Elkannan added 15 points for Regina while Kaz Dornstauder finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
  • Drew Ackerman came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 9 rebounds in 16 minutes on the floor.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and Fraser Valley will play at the University of Alberta's Saville Community Sports Centre next Friday at 1:30 PM (MT). The winner of that game will meet the Golden Bears the following day with that Saturday's contest also slated for at 1:30 PM (MT) start time.
