Saturday win secures weekend road split for Cougars

Cougars follow up Friday setback with 3-1 victory over Manitoba on Saturday

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team earned a weekend split on the road against the University of Manitoba Bisons, winning Saturday by a 3-1 score following a 6-1 series-opening setback on Friday.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Regina opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play. Jackson Doucet made a nice play to find an open Eric Houk in the corner, and the captain walked out in front and tucked it inside the far post to give the Cougars an early lead.
  • Manitoba responded shortly thereafter with an Andrew Boucher goal, then Eric Alarie scored just before the first intermission to go up 2-1 at the break. Skyler Bruce and Grady Lane both scored for Manitoba in the second period, then Michael King and Caden Zaplitny scored in a span of 45 seconds early in the third period to all but seal the victory.
  • Damon Cunningham made 30 saves for Regina, while Manitoba goaltender Braden Holt stopped 24 of the U of R's 25 shots.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Regina again opened the scoring in the first period. Parker Jasper scored with a nice shot from the high slot, giving the Augsburg College transfer his first U SPORTS goal.
  • The Cougars extended their lead with a power play goal in the second. Paycen Bjorklund set up a trailing Cole Wirun, who stepped into the slot and rifled a contested shot past Manitoba goalie Cole Plowman.
  • Manitoba cut into the deficit late in the second when Skyler Bruce scored at 18:10, but Regina restored its two-goal lead early in the third period on another power play goal, this time by Blake Heward on a shot from the left point.
  • Dylan Ernst made 34 saves for the Cougars in the win. Plowman stopped 12 of 15 shots for Manitoba.
