Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars lose two to Saskatchewan in U-Prairie Challenge battles

Saskatchewan wins 3-0 in Regina, 7-1 in Saskatoon to sweep weekend

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's soccer team was defeated twice by Saskatchewan over the weekend, losing 3-0 in Regina on Friday and falling by a 7-1 score in Saskatoon on Sunday as the Huskies swept the U-Prairie Challenge matchups.

FRIDAY: SASKATCHEWAN 3, COUGARS 0
  • Saskatchewan opened up the match with a pair of quick goals. Cheyenne Lehmann scored on a penalty kick just nine minutes in, and in the 11th minute Isabelle Lachance fired a shot into the top corner from just outside the left edge of the box to put the Huskies up by two.
  • The Cougars generated two shots on net in the first half but both were from range as Alyssa Falk's shot in the sixth minute and Savana Caligiuri's in the 23rd were both handled by Saskatchewan keeper Alyssa Paydli.
  • Caligiuri had Regina's best chance to cut the deficit to one in the 58th minute. The ball ended up at her feet inside the box following a free kick, but Caligiuri's volley missed just right.
  • Saskatchewan sealed the win with a goal scored directly off a corner kick by Daraida Sutherland in the 71st minute.

SUNDAY: COUGARS 1, SASKATCHEWAN 7
  • For the second straight match, Saskatchewan opened the scoring early as both Isabelle Lachance and Danielle Lehmann scored in the first 12 minutes of the contest.
  • The Huskies continued to add to their lead before the halftime break. Nammi Nguyen scored twice around a Regina own goal, putting Saskatchewan up 5-0.
  • The Cougars got one back in the 66th minute following a Taylor Mitchell corner kick. Jenna Muir got her head on the ball and it ended up with Dannah Garcia, who got Regina on the board with her first career U SPORTS goal. It was the second assist of the season for Muir, who also had a helper on Alyssa Falk's game-winning goal back on Sept. 11 against Lethbridge.
  • Saskatchewan capped the scoring with goals in the 85th minute and in the 90th minute by Jana van Niekirk and Cassidy Vieira, respectively.

NOTES
  • Sophia Montenegro made her Canada West debut in Friday's match. The first-year midfielder redshirted in 2025 and played the entire second half to log her first 45 minutes of playing time in a conference match.

NEXT UP
  • With their five-match homestand now wrapped up, the Cougars will be challenged with a road trip to the Prairie Division leaders this weekend. They'll play No. 3-ranked Calgary (7-0-0) on Friday before meeting Mount Royal (6-1-0) on Sunday afternoon.
