Darren Geddert's interception in the final minute of the fourth quarter sealed the University of Regina's 38-31 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West football game at Foote Field.
Alberta took over the ball in Rams territory near midfield in the final minute, but Geddert picked off Golden Bears quarterback Quade Armstrong's pass on the first play of the drive to give the ball right back to Regina.
The win gives the Rams a 4-3 record, while Alberta drops to 1-6. Regina is in sole possession of fourth place in the conference, but will play Manitoba (3-4) at Mosaic Stadium this Friday to decide the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot.
Unfortunately for the Rams, it wasn't all good news on Saturday.
Luke Derkson, the conference's leading rusher, left the game in the second quarter after suffering a suspected severe knee injury. Second-year running back
Austin Kappel, who came into the game with just four carries in his career, filled in admirably for Derkson and finished with 21 rushes for 115 yards on the ground.
Fifth-year quarterback
Teale Orban had his finest outing of the season for the Rams, completing 15 of his 22 passes for 247 yards and five touchdowns.
Chad Goldie had five receptions for 84 yards and two majors, and he moves ahead of Jason Clermont on the U of R's all-time list with 21 career touchdown catches.
Jordan Sisco,
Brenden Owens, and
Mark McConkey had the other touchdown receptions for the Rams.
Armstrong threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted five times by Regina's defence, including two picks by
Andrew Rumbaugh.
The Rams and the Bisons will square off on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium in what will be the biggest game of the year for both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
