U of R soccer finishes season at home

The University of Regina's women's soccer team finishes off its 2008 season this weekend with a Canada West matches against Fraser Valley (Saturday) and No. 10-ranked Trinity Western (Sunday).

Last weekend, the Cougars (0-9-3) suffered a pair of 2-1 road losses during their road trip to Lethbridge and Calgary. Tarina Mayer scored the first goal of her CIS career against the Pronghorns, while Tegan Koroluk notched her second goal of the season in the Calgary match and nearly scored her third in injury time to tie it up.

Though their record might not reflect it, the Cougars have taken a significant stride forward this season and have generated scoring chances while playing tough defence. The team has one of the top Canada West keepers in Michelle Anderson, who has a 1.39 goals-against average and enters the weekend ranked second in the conference with an .852 save percentage.

Also playing a significant role in the team's transformation this year has been Dana Renneberg. The second-year defender is one of just a handful of players in the conference to have played in every minute of every game and has been a stalwart for the Cougars on the back line.

Though the team's season will come to a conclusion after this weekend, the future looks bright for the Cougars. With no fifth-year players, all players should be returning next year and second-year head coach Bob Maltman expects to add another strong recruiting class during the offseason. Second-year forward Nakia Forsberg has been battling injury all season long, but should return to full health by the time the 2009 season begins.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon on both Saturday and Sunday at the U of R Field.
