A successful back-row attack by Meagan Onstad gave the University of Regina's women's volleyball team a 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 25-15, 17-15) win in a thrilling five-set match against the No. 3-ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

With the score knotted at 15 in the fifth and deciding set, Tammy Jule blasted an attack off the Spartan block and out of bounds, then Onstad's kill from the back row gave the Cougars a 17-15 win to clinch the match.

Fourth-year middle blocker Beth Clark had a huge match for the Cougars, recording 20 kills, a blazing .472 hitting percentage, a career-high five service aces, and four total blocks.

“One of the things we talked about after yesterday's match was having a bit more of a balanced offence,” Cougars head coach Melanie Sanford said. “We had a pretty good contribution from everyone, and we needed that to beat this team tonight.”

Jule ended up with 18 kills and added 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Six of Jule's 18 kills came in the final set alone. Solveig Nilson had nine kills and no errors on 15 attacks for a hitting percentage of .600, while Tiffany Herman dished out 58 assists. Defensively, libero Kelly Cowan led the Cougars with a career-high 28 digs.

Kara Jansen Van Doorn led the Spartans with 15 kills and five total blocks, while setter Chelsea Hudson had 37 assists and a team-high 12 digs to record her team's lone double-double. Danielle Foth had 13 kills and was on fire late in the game, recording five kills on just seven attacks in the fifth set.

Saturday's win pulls the Cougars (2-2) up to .500 for the year, while Trinity Western starts the year at 0-2.

The Cougars will travel to Winnipeg (0-0) next weekend for a two-match weekend against the Wesmen, while Trinity Western will host Calgary (2-0).

NOTES: With 221 total blocks over her four-year career at the U of R, Clark became the school's all-time leader in the category tonight … Clark surpasses Kristin Armstrong, who had 219 total blocks from 2001 to 2005 … though records are only available since the 2002-03 season, Cowan's 28 digs is the highest single-match total by a U of R player on record.
