Women's Preview
Riding a three-game winning streak and coming off of a bye week following a two-match sweep over Simon Fraser, the No. 9-ranked Cougars will look to draw closer to clinching a playoff spot with Saskatchewan (2-12) in town for a pair of matches at the CKHS.
The Cougars (7-7) enter the weekend in seventh place in Canada West, two matches up on eighth-place Thompson Rivers (5-9) and two matches behind UBC and Trinity Western, who are tied for fifth place at 9-5.
The Cougars have held the edge over the Huskies in recent seasons, sporting a 10-2 record against their provincial rivals since the 2002-03 season. Saskatchewan's last win over Regina was on Nov. 10, 2006 at the CKHS. The Cougars have won all three meetings between the two teams since that match.
Following this weekend against the Huskies, Regina will host the Alberta Pandas in what will be the final regular season home matches for fifth-year Cougars
Tammy Jule and
Kelly Cowan.
Men's Preview
The U of R's men's team is coming off of a road split against the Manitoba Bisons which included a 3-2 victory on Friday night, the Cougars' first of the season.
Ryan DeCosse and
Jamie Wilkins both had career nights during the win, as DeCosse registered 62 assists and four aces and Wilkins came up with 21 kills.
DeCosse, a fifth-year setter, continues to have a stellar season for the Cougars. He ranks second in the conference with 542 assists and, barring injury, could break his own school single-record for assists (577) this weekend.
The Huskies also won their first game of the season on Friday, defeating the UBC Thunderbirds 3-2. Guided by first-year head coach Adam Ewart, the U of S also has a 1-13 record coming into the weekend.
Both the men's and women's matches on Friday will be televised by Max Local on Demand. The broadcast will be available to SaskTel subscribers beginning on Wednesday.
