Box Score
Shayne Dueck's five yard touchdown reception with 72 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) a 10-9 home win over the Regina Rams (1-1) on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.
Engineered by Huskie quarterback Laurence Nixon, the game-winning drive spanned eight plays and 75 yards and marked the first time in the contest that either team managed to break into the red zone.
The Rams had a chance to tie the game with 39 seconds remaining after quarterback
Marc Mueller drove the Rams downfield, but a 45-yard field goal attempt by
Perri Scarcelli fell wide left. On the final play of the game, the Rams were able to take down Saskatchewan punter Grant Shaw in the end zone for a safety, but it wasn't enough to overcome the three-point deficit.
Nixon completed 26 of his 37 passes for 243 yards. Travis Gorski was his top receiver, catching eight balls for 71 yards. Dueck ended up with five receptions for 36 yards, none bigger than his touchdown catch late in the fourth. Garrett Bolen led Saskatchewan on the ground with 41 rushing yards.
Mueller completed 23 of 40 passes for 296 yards.
Mark McConkey led Regina in both receptions (7) and receiving yards (72).
The Rams thought they had scored the first major of the game with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, as Mueller aired out a 33-yard pass that was hauled in by McConkey in the end zone. The play was called back because of a holding penalty, however, and the Rams had to settle for a 30-yard Scarcelli field goal that stood up as the only points of the opening frame.
Saskatchewan tied the game with about five minutes left in the first half, as the Huskies took advantage of good field position following a Rams fumble and hit a 41-yard field goal. The two teams went into the halftime break tied at three.
Regina retook the lead midway through the third quarter as Scarcelli hit a 39-yard field goal following a 32-yard toss from Mueller to
Andrew Busby. Neither team scored until with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, when a Scarcelli punt went out of the side of the end zone for a single. The final drive by Nixon took just two minutes and 15 seconds off the clock.
The Rams will be back in action next Friday night against the Calgary Dinos at Mosaic Stadium. The Huskies will have a week off before heading to Alberta on Sept. 25.
