Volleyball hosts Calgary this weekend

The University of Regina's men's and women's volleyball teams both play their final regular season home matches this weekend, as they'll host the Calgary Dinos on Friday and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The women's team is coming off of a weekend sweep over Simon Fraser, with the No. 6-ranked Cougars taking both matches in straight sets over the Clan to improve their Canada West record to 9-5. Regina remains one win back of Brandon (10-4) as the Cougars continue to try to secure their first home postseason game since the 1989-90 campaign.

Saturday will mark the final home match for fifth-year players Meagan Smith and Beth Clark. Smith, who has spent the past three seasons in a starting role for the Cougars on the right side, had a team-leading 23 service aces last year and was one of just three U of R players to register in the triple digits in both kills (143) and digs (120). Clark is having arguably her finest season with the U of R, as she ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage (.349), fourth in kills per set (3.27), and fifth in blocks per set (1.1).

Calgary (6-8) was ranked No. 8 in this week's CIS Top Ten, as the Dinos are currently battling with Winnipeg (5-8) for the seventh and final Canada West playoff berth. Calgary has a balanced offence that features four players – Lindsey Doland, Maura Hayes, Raynell Lavertu, and Laura Spance – with at least 100 kills on the season.

On the men's side, the Cougars (0-12) will be returning to the court for the first time since a road trip to Trinity Western two weeks ago. The Spartans won in straight sets on Jan. 15 and took a 3-1 victory on the 16th.

Regina will be playing its final home contests with fifth-year outside hitter Mathew Brooks in uniform. Brooks is the U of R's all-time rally-point era leader in kills, as he enters the weekend with 834 for his career – an average of just under three per set. Brooks is also second on the team with 43 digs and is tied for second on the Cougars with 15 total blocks.

Brooks leads the Cougars with 83 kills this season, while Jamie Wilkins is second with 63 and Brody Waddell is third with 51. First-year setters Caleb Eschbach and Derek Delavau continue to take turns controlling Regina's offence, while Lindsey Isaak is the team's leader with 91 digs.

Calgary's men's team is ranked No. 4 in the CIS and enter the weekend in second place in Canada West with a 9-3 record. Fourth-year left side Curtis James leads the Dinos with 114 kills, while four other Calgary players have at least 70 kills on the season – including Graham Vigrass, who has recorded 74 kills in only six matches and averages 3.36 kills per set.
