Box Score

The No. 6-ranked Regina Rams were defeated by the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 52-29 on Friday night in both teams' final game of the Canada West schedule.

The loss will send Regina on the road to Calgary next Saturday for a Canada West semifinal matchup, while Saskatchewan clinches the regular season title with the win and will host Alberta next weekend.

The Huskies opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Dathan Thomas, a score which was almost immediately answered by a 54-yard pass to Brenden Owens which set up a one-yard plunge for a major by Rams quarterback Marc Mueller.

It was all Saskatchewan from there, though. The Huskies reeled off four unanswered majors to take a 28-point lead into halftime, then extended the advantage with another touchdown early in the third quarter.

The Rams tried to make a game of it, pulling to within 16 points after a 17-yard touchdown reception by Connor Haas and a successful two-point conversion seven minutes into the fourth quarter, but Thomas' third touchdown run of the game put the game away for Saskatchewan with four minutes left in the contest.

Laurence Nixon was 23-for-32 and threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns for Saskatchewan. Jade Etienne had eight catches for 204 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies, while Thomas ended up with 105 rushing yards.

Mueller completed 29 of his 44 passes for 437 yards and two touchdowns. Owens (110) and Jared Janotta (107) both hit triple figures in receiving yards, while Mark McConkey was just behind with 96.

Nico Higgs led Saskatchewan with 7½ total tackles and added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Both Mitch Friesen and Bryce McCall recorded interceptions for the Huskies, while Seamus Neary and David Rybinski both had sacks.

Benton Gieni led the Rams with 6½ total tackles and a sack. Stefan Charles and Logan Brooks also had sacks for Regina, while Jamir Walker set a Rams single-season record with his fifth interception of 2010 and ran it back 58 yards for a major – his third interception return touchdown of the season.

Regina and Calgary will meet next Saturday at 1 p.m. at McMahon Stadium. It will be the Shaw TV Game of the Week and shown live in Regina on Access7.

NOTES: Adrian Charles had 37 rushing yards to end up with 972 for the season, which breaks Neal Hughes' school record of 953 set in 2003 ... Mueller set a Canada West record with 182 completions and a school record with a 65.5% completion rate ... Walker set Rams single-season records in interceptions (5) and interception return touchdowns (3) and is tied with Steve Ryan for the school's career interceptions lead (9).
