The University of Regina's women's volleyball team came out flat in the first set but recovered to take a four-set win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Thompson Rivers came out firing to open the match, hitting at a .296 clip in the first set and getting six kills from Kelly Asleson as they took an early lead with a 25-16 win.
The Cougars woke up in a big way in the second, hitting an impressive .474 and squaring the match at one set apiece with a 25-11 victory. The Cougars kept the momentum going with a 25-14 win in the third set, then were able to hold off Thompson Rivers to clinch the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
The No. 8-ranked Cougars improve to 3-3 with the win, while Thompson Rivers falls to 0-6.
Rookie middle
Michelle Sweeting had a fine match for the Cougars, scoring a career-high 11 kills on just 15 attacks and adding eight blocks.
Meagan Onstad also had 11 kills for Regina, while
Tiffany Herman had 38 assists and
Rebecca Rink tied for the match lead with 12 digs.
Asleson ended up with the match's lone double-double, collecting 12 kills and tying Rink with 12 digs for Thompson Rivers. Amanda Frayne had 10 kills for the WolfPack, while Kara Twomey recorded 22 assists.
Thompson Rivers hosts the Alberta Pandas (2-4) next weekend, while the Cougars will hit the road for a pair of matches against the University of Calgary (3-3).
