Men’s basketball puts early undefeated record on the line against Lethbridge

11/4/2010 3:46:07 PM

Off to a 2-0 start for the third time in the past four seasons, the University of Regina's men's basketball team hosts the University of Lethbridge (1-3) this weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars and the Pronghorns are scheduled to tip off on Friday night at 8 p.m. and on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Regina is coming off a weekend sweep over the Brandon Bobcats which saw them win 103-77 in a Friday rout before squeaking out a 76-75 victory on Saturday night.

Fifth-year post Kris Heshka led the Cougars in both points (33) and rebounds (16) over the two wins over Brandon, scoring a game-high 23 points during Friday's victory. Playing his first Canada West games following a two-season absence from the team, third-year forward Paul Gareau totalled 25 points for the Cougars.

Heshka, Gareau, Marek Downarowicz, Sterling Nostedt, and Brendan Hebert served as the starting five for the U of R in both contests. The Cougars will be without Jeff Lukomski and Jared Janotta for both games, as they'll be unavailable due to their commitments with the Rams football team.

Lethbridge has a 1-3 conference record after losing twice at home to Trinity Western and splitting on the road with Calgary last weekend. Fifth-year guard Randy Davis' three-pointer with one second remaining on the clock gave Lethbridge its lone win of the season last Friday, an 80-79 victory over the Dinos. Davis leads the Dinos with an average of 18.8 points per game through the team's first four contests, while third-year transfer Zack Humphrey (Spokane College) has hit a team-high 11 three-pointers and averages 12.5 points per game.

The teams split the two meetings against each other last season. Lethbridge holds an 11-8 advantage in the all-time series which dates all the way back to the 1969-70 season, the Cougars' second in interuniversity basketball.

The Cougars will travel to Langley, B.C. to take on No. 8 Trinity Western (2-2) next weekend, while Lethbridge will host the No. 4-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (2-2).
