Box Score
Down 22 points heading into the final quarter, the University of Regina Rams mounted a spirited comeback but fell short, losing 40-33 to the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night in a Canada West semifinal game at McMahon Stadium.
The Rams shaved the deficit down to seven points after two touchdown catches by
Brenden Owens and a one-yard touchdown run by
Adrian Charles with 59 seconds remaining, but weren't able to recover the ensuing onside kick.
It looked like Regina might get the ball back with about 40 seconds left after a second-down pass by Erik Glavic fell incomplete, but Calgary's drive was extended after the Rams were whistled for pass interference. The Dinos picked up another first down after a pair of Steven Lumbala rushes to seal the victory and the right to host Alberta next weekend in the Canada West championship game.
Glavic completed 18 of his 27 passes during the contest for 360 yards and four touchdowns, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Parker on the game's first play from scrimmage.
Matt Walter had 162 rushing yards for the Dinos, while Parker ended up with three touchdown catches and 145 receiving yards and Nathan Coehoorn caught eight passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Tye Noble led Calgary with eight tackles.
Marc Mueller was 28-for-38 for the Rams and threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Owens ended up with nine catches for 101 yards, while
Connor Haas had three catches for 80 yards, including a 60-yard reception in the second quarter which set up Regina's first touchdown of the game.
Bruce Anderson led the Rams defensively with 9½ total tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Jamir Walker and
Kirby Kezama both had interceptions, while
Chris Sciog matched Anderson with 9½ tackles.
Saturday's game marked the final action in a U of R uniform for seven fifth-year players, including Anderson, Charles,
John Hashem,
Devin Hillier,
Cale Inglis,
John Kanaroski, and
Jeff Lukomski. Fifth-year player
Chris King and
Matt Yausie both missed the game due to injury.
NOTES: Mueller's 73.7% completion rate sets a Rams single-game playoff record.
