Cougars host Bobcats in first home playoff matches since 1990

2/19/2010 9:02:12 AM

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team hosts the Brandon Bobcats this weekend in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The first and second matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. If needed, a third and deciding match will be played on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.

The Cougars earned the right to host after last Saturday's 3-1 win over the Bobcats in Brandon. The win assured Regina a fourth-place finish in Canada West, setting up a rematch with fifth-place Brandon in the first round.

The win also set a U of R record for most wins in a conference season (13) and gave the Cougars their first home playoff series since hosting the 1990 Great Plains Athletic Conference finals against Manitoba.

The two teams are extremely familiar with each other, having met four times during non-conference play this season in addition to last week's two Canada West matches in Brandon. The Cougars have won five of the six matches, with Brandon's lone victory coming in last Friday's come-from-behind 3-2 win.

Fifth-year middle blocker Beth Clark had a dominant conference season for the Cougars, setting a U of R single-season record with 78 total blocks and finishing second in the conference with 250 kills. Clark, who became the school's all-time rally-point era leader in blocks last season, also surpassed former outside hitter Tammy Julé in career kills last weekend with Brandon.

Brandon, which finished first in the conference in total blocks, is led at the net by the one-two punch of Erin Visch-Krahn and Claire Willerton. Willerton led the conference with 87 total blocks, while Visch-Krahn finished just behind her with 84. Willerton – in just her third season of eligibility – also finished fourth in the conference with a .307 hitting percentage.

The winner of the series will advance to next weekend's Canada West Final Four, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed not located in Greater Vancouver.

Video webcasts and statistics will be available live for all three matches at reginacougars.com.

NOTES: The Cougars hold a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series counting conference games only … Regina and Brandon have never met in the postseason … Clark ends her five-year career with 948 kills … Access7 will broadcast the first and third matches on a tape-delay basis.
